1917
In October 1917, Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik party seized power from the Provisional Government in Petrograd in a coup that would become known as the October Revolution. The fall of Tsar Nicholas II's dynasty earlier that year had left a power vacuum that the Bolsheviks exploited with ruthless efficiency. The revolution led to the creation of the Soviet Union and reshaped global politics for the rest of the 20th century.

1949
On 1 October 1949, Mao Zedong stood atop the Tiananmen gate in Beijing and formally proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The announcement came after the Communist Party's victory in the Chinese Civil War, forcing Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek to flee to Taiwan. The founding of the PRC began one of the most significant political transformations of the twentieth century.

1972
President Richard Nixon arrived in China on 21 February 1972 for a state visit that ended more than two decades of diplomatic isolation between the United States and the People's Republic. Nixon met with Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai in what was described as 'the week that changed the world.' The visit opened the way for full diplomatic relations between the two powers.

1993
In October 1993, Nelson Mandela and South African President F.W. de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their negotiations to end apartheid and establish a democratic South Africa. The Nobel Committee cited their willingness to engage in difficult dialogue despite decades of institutionalised racial oppression. Their collaboration set the stage for South Africa's first fully democratic elections in April 1994.

On 4 March 2018, former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found critically ill on a bench in Salisbury, England, having been poisoned with the military-grade nerve agent Novichok. British investigators identified two Russian GRU officers as suspects, and the UK government formally blamed the Russian state, triggering a major diplomatic crisis and the expulsion of dozens of diplomats on both sides.
