What is Headlines?

Headlines is a daily history game. Every day you get five real newspaper headlines with their dates stripped out, and your job is to guess the year each one was published. That's the whole game: no multiple choice, no trivia questions. Just the headline as it was printed, and your sense of when the world sounded like that.

It's the Wordle format applied to history: one puzzle a day, the same five headlines for everybody who plays, about two minutes. Each headline is worth up to 100 points and you lose two points for every year you're off, so a perfect day is 500. When you're done you can share your score as a spoiler-free grid.

If you're stuck, you can reveal a clue: another real headline from within a year or two of the answer. It costs you half the points on that headline, so it's a trade rather than a freebie.

A new edition is published every midnight. It's free, there's nothing to install, and you don't need an account to play, though you can make one if you want your streak saved.
