On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig operated by BP exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing eleven workers and triggering the largest marine oil spill in history. For 87 days, crude oil gushed from the Macondo well approximately one mile below the surface before it was finally capped. An estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil were released, devastating marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishing and tourism communities across the Gulf Coast.

Cruise liner Concordia capsizes off Italian coast, captain accused of abandoning ship

In January 2012, the Costa Concordia cruise ship struck rocks off the island of Giglio, Italy, and partially sank, killing 32 people. Captain Francesco Schettino became infamous after recordings emerged of the Italian coastguard ordering him to return to the stricken vessel while he had already evacuated. Schettino was later convicted of multiple manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Its dramatic landing, broadcast live worldwide, was nicknamed 'Seven Minutes of Terror' due to the complexity of the descent.
